Top 20 uses for aromatherapy oils

Essential oils and aromatherapy oils have many uses, and most of us don’t really make the most of these magical substances. Whether it’s in the home, for the children, as part of your beauty routine, for travel or to keep your emotions in balance I’m going to take you through my top 20 uses for aromatherapy oils and what they can do to help you improve almost everything in your life.

1 – Freshen up

Whether it’s your laundry or your bin aromatherapy oils can make anything smell better. For laundry add 5-10 drops of lavender to a cloth and put it in the tumble dryer with your clothes, sheets or towels. For the bin add 1-3 drops of an aromatherapy oil such as tea tree into a cotton ball, which can then be put at the bottom of the bin.

2 – Refresh your work surfaces in the kitchen

Simply add 2-5 drops of lemon aromatherapy oil to a damp cloth or sponge and use it to wipe your kitchen tops.

3 – Make your fireplace cosy

Add 5 drops of an aromatherapy oil to a log and leave it to dry for 15 minutes, before adding it to a lit fire. I recommend orange for a warm smell.

4 – De germ your hands

Use a mixture of around 12 drops of peppermint, 22 drops of tea tree, and 14 drops of sweet orange and add it to a pot of aloe vera gel. Make sure it is mixed properly before using as an antibacterial hand gel.

5 – Sooth your aching muscles

Ideal to encourage muscles to recover after a hard session at the gym add a few drops of eucalyptus, basil or lavender to a warm bath and simply relax as you soak.

6 – Reduce neck pain

Use 4 drops of lavender into any suitable carrier massage oil such as sweet almond oil or even olive oil and rub into the neck and continue to massage.

7 – Help fight infection and increase healing in cuts and scratches

Use 2 drops of tea tree with a quarter of a cup of water before shaking the mixture in a rollable top bottle. This can then be rolled over the affected areas.

8 – Strengthen nails

Combine 3 drops of Frankincense, 3 drops of Myrrh and 1 oz of Argan oil in a roller bottle, before shaking well. This can then be rolled onto your nails to increase their strength.

9 – Hair serum

Combine 7 drops of Rosewood, 7 drops of Sandalwood and 5 tsp of Meadowfoam and combine well. Apply the serum to the ends of your hair after washing. This will moisturise your hair without making it greasy.

10 – Heal stretch marks

Combine 5 drops of Frankincense and 5 drops of Lavender with some water to dilute, into a roller bottle and shake well. Apply to your stretch marks 3 – 4 times a week. You should start to see results within a month.

11 – Hyperactivity in children

Use lavender in an aromatherapy oil diffuser to add a calming scent to the air and help hyperactive children to relax.

12 – Reduce smell in nappy

Add 4 drops of Lavender and 4 drops of Tea Tree to 1/4 cup washing soda powder and add to the washing machine with cloth nappies. This will ensure the nappies smell better for longer.

13 – Create a more creative work atmosphere

Add Lavender aromatherapy oils to a diffuser in your office and ease anxiety, promoting a healthy and more productive work environment.

14 – Relax

Use Lavender in your aromatherapy diffuser to help you relax after work or at the weekends.

15 – Add energy to your day

Combine 4 drops of Basil, 3 drops of Ginger and 5 drops of Grapefruit aromatherapy oils to a diffuser to give you a kick of energy.

16 – Improve the clarity of your mind

Inhale Frankincense before bed time, and think about your day before sleep to clear your mind of the day’s past and open it to the new possibilities of tomorrow.

17 – Help fight anxiety

Combine 2 drops of Chamomile with 2 drops Lavender in a roll on bottle with some water to dilute. When you feel anxious during the flight or beforehand roll the mixture onto your wrist and inhale the scent deeply.

18 – Reduce the effects of jet lag

Combine 1 drop of Lavender, 1 drop of Grapefruit, 1 drop of Peppermint and 1 drop of Ginger with water to dilute to a roller bottle and apply to wrists and collarbones to fight the effects of jet lag on the body.

19 – Get to sleep faster

Combine Chamomile (Roman), Clary Sage and Bergamot and inhale deeply at least 5 times before bed.

20 – Recover from the effects of a night out

Mix 2 drops of Tangerine, 1 drop of Rosemary and 1 tsp Coconut oil and apply to skin to give your face and body a rejuvenated feel after lack of sleep.
