Detox for Health: Detox as a Way of Life
Detox is a word we hear a lot these days. Lots of products and companies will claim to help you ‘detox’ to become a healthier person. Sometimes it can feel quite difficult to know which products and treatments will actually help rid your body of nasty toxins and which are just part of the latest fads. So here are a few ideas to help kick start your detox and improve your body’s wellbeing:
• Drink lots of water
Water is a vital part of our existence; it carries important nutrients to our cells, aids digestion, flushes the body of waste, keeps our kidneys functioning, lubricates our joints and helps regulate body temperature and metabolism, to name just a few! When we don’t get enough water we become dehydrated, which wears down our system and can compromise our quality of life. By drinking more than eight glasses of water every day we can keep our bodies healthy and happy, and flush out those things which make us feel worse.
• Treat yourself to a sauna
Heating the body enhances the metabolic process, makes infections heal quicker, enhances our circulation and oxygenates our tissues. It mirrors the process when we get an infection and the body will raise its internal temperature and give us a fever to fight the infection. By making ourselves sweat we can also keep our skin healthier, which helps to detoxify the body of toxic agents, such as lactic acid, sodium and uric acid that can build up in our bodies. So it’s definitely worth spending some time in a sauna getting all hot and sweaty!
• Dandelion Tea
Dandelions have long been used to help maintain a healthy liver. The liver deals with all aspects of digestion and metabolic processes and a clean liver will produce more bile, improving the digestive process and therefore removing toxins quickly and efficiently. So it’s pretty important to keep your liver as healthy as possible! Dandelion tea is also full of vitamins and nutrients which can help with hepatic healing.
• Herbal Medicine for Colon Cleaning
The colon is another important organ in detoxing the body. It is part of our digestive system, which eliminates wastes and toxins. It also absorbs water and sodium (salt) to maintain the body’s electrolyte balance. Lots of health problems are caused when the colon isn’t functioning properly, such as digestive discomfort and constipation. There are many herbal medicines available to help in cleansing the colon, containing natural ingredients such as apple pectin, oat bran, flaxseed powder and aloe vera, which are all proven to aid digestion and improve colon function.
• Fruit Juice Fast
There has been some controversy surrounding the fruit juice fast and its health benefits, but carried out in a safe and sensible way it can help in the detox process. By flooding the body with the natural nutrients and vitamins found in fruit juices you will rid the body of built up toxins. This is a good way to start a weight loss programme of healthy eating and exercise, but make sure not to juice fast for longer than a couple of days without advice or guidance from your GP as this can start to have a detrimental effect on your health.
Sleep is an integral part of a healthy lifestyle. After only a couple of days without sleep the body will start to breakdown. While we sleep the body produces extra protein molecules, which aid in strengthening the immune system, allowing the body to repair itself from a wide range of problems, including infections, sun damage and stress. It is when we sleep that the body processes those harmful toxins and replenishes our organs. During a detox programme getting between 7 and 8 hours of sleep every night is vital to help the body regenerate and detoxify.
For detox to become a way of life you must routinely make the time to go through these detox processes. It is recommended you detox your body every three months in order to maintain the positive effects you will start to see and feel. Incorporating it into your life in this way means it will become second nature and you will soon start reaping the benefits of this healthier way of life.
